Ants

Your home may be home-sweet-home for these little critters, which impose on your hospitality by eating your sweets, meats, and vegetables. They may be unwelcome in our homes, but in nature ants play an important role by mixing soil, destroying plant-eating insects and distributing seeds.

  • There are over 10,000 different species of ants worldwide.
  • When they enter your home, they look for sweets and substances containing protein.
  • Once ants find a food source they lay down a long-lasting invisible chemical trail for the rest of the colony to follow.
  • Fire ants have been known to remove rubber insulation from telephone wires. Their sting is very painful and can kill young wildlife and domestic animals.
  • Ants are social insects that live in colonies of up to 1 million ants.
  • Carpenter ant nests are made in deteriorating, moist wood. Often the colony will extend its nest into adjacent, sound wood. Carpenter ants are commonly found in porch pillars and roofs, windowsills, telephone poles, live and dead trees, rotting logs and stumps, and wood in contact with soil.
